Everyone’s advice for cleaning before a party is either “deep-clean the whole house from top to bottom” (impossible in 48 hours) or “just tidy up” (won’t cut it for anything above a casual gathering). Here’s the realistic middle: a 48-hour plan built around what guests actually see, feel, and remember — from a company that does this for a living on the OC coast.

Kitchen fully reset before hosting guests

The core rule: Guests remember four zones — entryway, bathroom, kitchen, and whatever room they sit in longest. Everything else is invisible. Spend 80% of your time on those four. Everything under this heading is designed around that principle.

The 48-hour timeline

48 hours out Deep work only

  • Book the deep clean if you’re hiring one out (last-minute slots go fast on Fridays)
  • Grocery list finalized, alcohol picked up, ice on order
  • Guest bedroom or overflow seating identified and cleared
  • Anything you’re pretending isn’t there — the pile in the corner, the unopened Amazon boxes — either dealt with or moved to a storage closet you can lock
  • Windows opened for 30 minutes if OC weather cooperates (aired-out home reads clean before you touch a surface)

24 hours out Deep clean the four guest zones

  • Entryway: shoes off the floor, hard surfaces mopped, sconces or entry-table dust wiped, guest-facing mirror clean, doormat shaken out
  • Guest bathroom: full detail — toilet (interior, exterior, base), sink and vanity, mirror streak-free, fresh hand towel, empty trash with fresh liner, floor mopped, shower glass wiped even if guests won’t use it
  • Kitchen: counters cleared and wiped, stovetop cleaned, sink scrubbed and dried, cabinet fronts near the stove degreased, floor mopped, trash out and fresh liner
  • Living / dining room: vacuum and mop, dust hard surfaces, fluff throw pillows, wipe TV screen, straighten anything crooked, remove personal clutter (mail, remotes, chargers)

4 hours out Prep the environment

  • Music playlist queued, lighting dimmed appropriately, candles or diffuser going (unscented candles read more premium than heavy fragrance)
  • Bar / drink station set up in a defined spot
  • Coats-and-bags landing zone identified (guest bedroom bed, entryway bench)
  • Guest bathroom: check paper stock, refold hand towel, one last mirror wipe
  • Trash pre-emptied so it can absorb the party volume without overflowing

30 minutes out The last-mile check

  • Toilet paper fresh, hand soap topped off in guest bathroom
  • Kitchen sink empty and dry
  • Trash liner replaced one final time
  • Front porch and doorbell area checked (first thing guests see)
  • Pets confined, fed, comfortable
  • One deep breath. Pour yourself a drink.

What to skip — nobody sees it

Time is limited. These get zero attention pre-party unless they’re in one of the four guest zones:

  • Baseboards throughout the house (nobody looks)
  • Interior windows away from the party area
  • Inside cabinets, drawers, closets (unless a guest is staying overnight)
  • Master bedroom / master bathroom (if guests aren’t using them)
  • Home office, garage, laundry room
  • Ceiling fans in unused rooms

These matter for a full deep clean — they don’t matter for a party. If you find yourself scrubbing baseboards at midnight before guests arrive, you’re doing it wrong.

The OC entertaining reality

Something worth naming: hosting standards in Newport Coast, Corona del Mar, Beverly Hills, and Malibu run higher than the national average. Guests notice the details — cloudy shower glass in the powder room, dust on the light fixture over the dining table, cooking oil on the range hood. These aren’t things you can fix in 30 minutes the day-of.

Which is why we get a lot of pre-event deep-clean bookings 3–5 days before parties, holiday gatherings, and out-of-town family visits. Same rule as post-move-in cleans: hit the deep-clean scope first, then the day-of touch-up is quick and stays sharp through the event.

When to hire this out

Rough guide from our booking data:

  • Casual dinner (4–6 people): Do it yourself. 48-hour plan above is plenty.
  • Backyard party or holiday gathering (10–20 people): Consider a professional deep clean 3–5 days out, then handle day-of yourself.
  • Formal event, listing showing, or 20+ people: Hire the deep clean plus a day-of touch-up service. The cost is a rounding error compared to what you’re spending on catering.
  • Airbnb turnover: Every time. That’s what our move-out service is designed for.

Our deep-clean starting rate for a 3-bedroom OC home is $399 (see full pricing). Book 3–5 days out for holidays and event weekends — those slots fill first.
